Uni students in Samoa concoct new brew

Four students studying marketing at the National University have ended up with a new beer, simply called MATE.

Tasked by their Marketing 101 lecturer to create a marketing strategy for Vailima Breweries, their research lead them to creating their own product which they would then market and promote.

“We decided to create a product similar to a product of Vailima. Therefore, we had to investigate the marketing aspect of the product that we chose to create,” said group member Junior Iosefa.

He said they used pineapple, chocolate, yeast and sugar.

“We boiled the pineapple peel to extract the juice from it. Yeast is then added to lukewarm water to activate it. In a clean bucket, we add water and sugar, we measure so that it’s not too sweet, add in the juice from the pineapple peel, mix in the chocolate and then pour it in the lukewarm water which we had added the yeast before and then mix well,” he said.

After four days of fermentation, the group later describing the 10 percent alcohol content end result as “amazing”.

The group hasn’t decided if they would continue to produce their MATE but they hope their hard work will reap good grades with their lecturer.

A pint of MATE might work wonders with the lecturer!
