The leader of the Catholic Church in American Samoa, Bishop Peter Brown, has urged local Catholics to call on leaders for coronavirus testing not just for those with symptoms but general area testing.

“Only when this is done can we medically say with confidence we are virus free,” he said in a message on the Diocese of Samoa-Pago Pago FaceBook page.

The church leader referred to the Cook Islands where after many hundreds of COVID-19 tests the Prime Minister officially declared the islands free of coronavirus.

According to the Bishop, “American Samoa with a small population had been declared a disaster area therefore public testing can be done.”

He urged local Catholics to contact their faipule and government leaeders and urge for community COVID-19 testing.

In his homily for the online Mass that he led this past Sunday, Bishop Brown preached about the gospel of the Road to Emmaus and called for special prayers for local leaders.
