The Samoa Office of The Regulator, which regulates and monitors all telecommunications operations in the country, has issued a statement against social media based allegations of a link between COVID-19 and the 5G mobile telephony technology.

The statement was released this afternoon through the government press secretariat and points out that “5G has not been launched in Samoa and therefore there are no equipment in operation”.

According to the statement, 5G is the latest wireless mobile phone technology which was first widely deployed in 2019.

It urges the public not to resort to damaging vital equipment as it is being witnessed overseas as a result of fake news being circulated about an apparent link between 5G and COVID-19.

“It is important that we as a nation understand that there is no 5G threat so that we do not result to destroying critical infrastructure at this time of difficulty and when it is mostly needed,” said the statement.

It also warns that it is an offense under the Telecommunications Act to damage any telecommunications network or related telecommunications facility and anyone found to be in contravention of the law will be dealt with according to the law.
