Respected botanist dies from coronavirus

A well known ethnobotanist in Hawaii and the Pacific, Dr. Art Whistler has died in Honolulu.

It’s believed he died from Coronavirus.

Media reports from Hawaii say Dr. Whistler tested positive for coronavirus after returning from Washington State in early March.

The former Peace Corps volunteer taught at Samoa College in Apia and is widely known for research into the medicinal value of native plants and trees. Some of his books include Samoan Herbal Medicine., Plants in Samoan culture and Tropical Ornamentals. He was 75.

Dr. Whistler is the third reported coronavirus related death in Hawaii since the pandemic began and the second in as many days. All three victims were residents of Oahu.
