Next Monday those who filed their taxes between January 30 and February 2 should have their tax refund checks in the mail.

Treasury is mailing out refund checks through the Pago Pago Post Office for those with mail boxes.

An announcement from Treasurer Ueligitone Tonumaipe’a says refund checks were initially planned to be in the mail by tomorrow but due to “logistical difficulties”, the checks will only be delivered to the Post Office tomorrow and made available in the mail next Monday, April 6.

For those with general delivery as mailing addresses and those without mailing addresses, checks will be distributed by appointment only by the Disbursing Office.

This is to avoid large gatherings and stay in compliance of the social distancing requirements for coronavirus.

The Disbursing Office will contact individuals to schedule a time to pick up your check.

If there is no phone contact on your records, Treasury asks that you please call Disbursing for an appointment.

Please have your tax return copy on hand when calling to verify your identity.

The checks in this batch total $1.8 million.

Additional Child Tax Credit refunds total $1.1 million and the balance of $746,068, is from ASG.

The treasurer advises that if you are expecting to receive your tax refund on this tax run and have any concerns regarding the mailing address listed on your tax filing, please contact the Tax Office at tel:633-4181.

“As many families may be using a single mail box, any willful act to cash or use a tax refund check belonging to another tax payer will be subject to prosecution to the full extent of the law,” the treasurer warned.

“If you receive a tax refund check in error, please return the refund check to the Post Office or to the Department of Treasury Tax Office.”

Treasurer Tonumaipe’a urges  all taxpayers who have not filed their 2019 tax returns, and are expecting tax refunds to file as soon as possible.

These filings will also be used as the basis to determine eligibility for the stimulus funding included under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) of 2020.
