President Donald Trump approved Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero’s request for a major disaster declaration due to COVID-19 on Guam, according to a White House press release.

The president’s major disaster declaration makes federal funding, like disaster unemployment assistance, available to the island.

Pete Gaynor, FEMA administrator, Department of Homeland Security, named Robert Fenton as the federal coordinating officer for federal recovery operations in the affected areas, the release stated.

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the territory and warranted by the results of further assessments.

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero says to date, a total of 55 cases tested positive and 227 tests were negative, with seven recovered and one death.

A week ago, a 68 year-old woman became the first COVID-19 death in the region.
