Parents turned up at the school nearest them to pick up lunch bags, a combination of fruit, sandwiches and a packet of milk for the children, the first distribution of meals while schools are out for an emergency.

At Manulele Elementary Schools the distribution went smoothly.

Mrs Faleata Kavalu said she was thankful for the government’s help.

She was able to pick up lunches for her two sons who attend Manulele and another in ECE.

Other parents were picking up lunches for children attending Samoana and Manumalo Academy , also at Manulele Elementary.

The staff said they are using today as a test run and if they are short they will up their numbers for tomorrow.

Manager of the School Lunch Program, Christine Fualaau who was working from home as she is in quarantine said parents were appreciative of the help. She said they were short in some schools and will use the data from today to determine how much should be delivered to the different schools.

A total of 13,000 lunch bags were prepared today.

Fualaau explained that they cannot provide hot meals at this stage as they don’t have the tupperwear needed.

She said maybe later on but for now this was a quick plan to provide food for our school children.

She complimented the School Lunch Program staff and her deputy Lei Auelua for their efforts and also thanked parents for their cooperation.
