Hunger has driven the last four remaining escaped prisoners from Monday’s mass escape at Samoa’s Tanumalala Prison to give themselves up in the early hours of this morning.

The escaped convicts had sought food from a catholic catechist and his wife at a village close to the prison.

The Samoa Police Service said that as of 5 this morning, March 26, the remaining four prisoners who were at large were captured at Falease’ela-uta village, about 5 miles east of the prison.

“SPS wishes to acknowledge Rev Pio Filipo Paiti and Mrs Mariana Kolisi Paiti of the Catholic Church at Falease’ela-uta for notifying police which led to the apprehension of the four prisoners,” said SPS.

SPS said the catechist and his wife had fed and counseled the young men.

They thanked the couple for their words of encouragement to the young men which resulted in their non-resistance when they were apprehended.

Thirty two of the escaped convicts had already been rounded up by yesterday evening after their rampaging escape from the newly opened prison.

The escape has left a young prisoner in hospital with severe head injuries after he and other prisoners tried to assist the overwhelmed prison guards.
