Bill makes deportation a sentence for foreigners

Any foreigner convicted of a felony in American Samoa would be subject to immediate deportation under a new bill that’s now before the Senate.

It’s sponsor is former associate judge and now Manu’a Senator Logoai Siaki Logoai.

The preamble of the bill states that felonies are the most serious types of criminal offenses that involve serious physical harm to victims and can also include offenses like white collar crimes and fraud schemes.

“The territory will not tolerate persons who do not adhere to the laws of American Samoa and if they are foreign nationals they should be deported immediately to their country of origin. This will prevent the possibility of repeat offenders and will protect and keep the citizens of American Samoa safe,” says the bill

The proposed legislation adds to the general sentencing provisions for felonies or misdemeanors this language: “The court may sentence to immediate deportation if a person is a foreign national”

The bill has been assigned to the Public Safety Committee chaired by Senator Faamausili Mau Mau Jr.
