Doctors at LBJ Hospital and Department of Health are being advised to begin looking out for symptoms of Coronavirus, the new virus that’s grabbing headlines and has become a scare around the world.

Department of Health Epidemiologist Dr. Aifili John Tufa says there’s no rapid test for this new virus here and DOH is putting measures in place to monitor for any possible cases.

This includes setting up a protocol for tests to be sent to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as this is a new virus and only CDC can test for it at this time.

Asked about surveillance of travelers Dr. Tufa said a travel advisory may be issued later today.

He indicated there’s a possibility for surveillance at the airport.

For now he said DOH is just alerting medical personnel to look out for symptoms of Coronovirus which are similar to a regular cold:  cough , fever, and for some, breathing difficulties.

He said this is what makes it hard to monitor for the new virus , its similarity with a common cold or flu.

And for the public, Dr Tufa said people should be aware of the disease and take heed of advice to protect them and their families.
