Reports have been circulating that former director of Youth and Women Affairs Jonathon Fanene is still being paid as a director despite his being removed from the position when he was charged in a domestic violence case last year.

With the latest case involving Fanene, KHJ News has received several emails and messages to our news website Talanei purporting that the former director remains on the ASG payroll.

We asked the Acting Director of DYWA Pa’u Roy Ausage if this is true.

He said flat out “no” and added he as acting Director of DWYA would know if this was the case.

Asked of the possibility that Fanene would be paid in a different role, Pa’u replied no.

The acting director told KHJ News that he even asked Governor Lolo Moliga about this and the governor’s answer was no.

Acting Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga removed Fanene from Director of DYWA five days after he was arrested and charged with felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from the assault of his wife and sister and discovery of unlicensed and prohibited weapons at his Malaeimi home.

This past weekend the former NFL star was again arrested for misdemeanor charges of third degree assault, public and private peace disturbance related to an incident last Friday in Nu’uuli where his wife was allegedly assaulted.

Fanene was released on bail of $1,000 and traveled off island Monday based on an earlier approval by the High Court to travel off island to visit his sick mother and tend to medical appointments.

He is due to return January 23rd and his next District Court appearance is February 19.
