Despite allegedly telling police on the night he was arrested that drugs found in a car he was  in belonged to him, John Taga’i Jr. pled not guilty when he appeared in High Court.

Samoa News reports that the 20-year old was a passenger in a car that police pulled over at a sobriety checkpoint December 28 last year.

A bag of bongo snacks he was holding when the vehicle was stopped spilled and police noticed that something thin and white had fallen out of the bag.

It turned out to be a half rolled joint containing leafy substance.

A pipe with a white substance was also found under the middle seat when police searched the vehicle.

Both the substances found tested positive as marijuana and methamphetamine.

Taga’i Jr told police the drugs belonged to him and that he bought them from two guys from Papua but he did not know their names.

During his arraignment in the High Court last week he pleaded not guilty.

He is charged with one count of unlawful possession of methamphetamine; one count of unlawful possession of marijuana – both felonies – and one count of underage drinking, a misdemeanor.

Bail was set at $10,000 and his pretrial conference is on February 7.
