The 5th time is a charm. After coming so, so close for half a decade, Amerika Samoa will finally return to Pago triumphant by winning the 2020 JPS Paradise Classic, defeating Hawaii Fire 14-12.

In a rematch of last year’s heartbreaking loss against Hawaii Fire, Team Amerika Samoa’s defense kept Hawaii Fire scoreless through the first half, then opened the 3rd quarter with a safety thanks to stellar efforts by our defensive front, led by Mazaichi Aviu, Tillis Sala and Hephren Pualau.

Samoana’s QB Jamu Tanielu was able to open things up in the 3rd period by running into the end zone on a quarterback sneak.

Vikings running back Manuita Sofeni sealed the deal late in the 4th quarter with a 5 hard touchdown

Offensive play caller Pooch Taase of Fagaitua said it was a team effort from all the school’s coaches getting on the same page.

Head Coach was Kevin Magalei of Tafuna, while Sharks skipper was Pati Pati and the offensive Line Coach was Will Lobendahn of Nuuuli Voc Tech.

Team Amerika Samoa won 3 out of 4 games.

The now champion seniors were 2-0 while our 7th and 8th graders were 1 and 1, beating out California to take 3rd place in their division.

Both teams, including the championship squad that defeated both Hawaii and California to take first place in the Junior Prep Sports Paradise classic, return to Pago Pago on Monday night.
