ASG has received its second payment from insurer Lloyds of London for damages to ASG property from Tropical Storm Gita in February of last year.

Governor Lolo Moliga shared this bit of news at yesterday’s cabinet meeting.

He said a payment of $3.2 million has been received from the insurance company whom he met with while in Honolulu.

The governor is hopeful that the insurer will pay another $5 million.

He has asked those involved in negotiations with the insurance company to work on getting this payment.

Lolo pointed out that the insurance company seemed to think that ASG was going to file a lawsuit against it over its Hurricane Gita insurance claim.  He assured the company that it will not sue as long as it pays American Samoa’s claim.

Insurance Commissioner Peter Fuimaono said in response to KHJ News questions that the $3.2 million was received a few days before Thanksgiving.

This is in addition to the first payment of $5 million from Lloyds of London.

Fuimaono told KHJ News that ASG’s total claim was $15 million and they are hoping to settle on a final payment of $6.8 million.

While Governor Lolo was in Honolulu he also visited and held discussion with the Marisco Shipyard company.

As a result of his meetings, representatives of the company are scheduled to arrive on island December 16 to assess the shipyard at Satala.

As listeners will recall the slipway cradle went of the tracks and this has halted repairs to the slipway since last October.

The governor  told KHJ News that it’s best to have experts come and look at the shipyard and recommend what should be done  to save this government asset.

The Marisco reps will be here for three days.
