Call for tougher building code

There’s been a call for a tougher building code for the territory and for agencies involved in enforcement of building permits to be more strict to prevent losses of property during cyclones,

During the hurricane season media workshop last week, Director of Homeland Security Samana Semo Veavea said many of the homes which were demolished or badly damaged by Cyclone Gita were haphazardly built and were not up to standard.

He said the territory needs a tough building code and agencies that deal with construction should not be issuing permits for homes that are not up to par.

It’s predicted that there will be three cyclones in our region this hurricane season.

The Homeland Security Director said people should prepare their homes to make them safe and prevent damages.
