In times of disasters, the speed and accuracy of information getting out to the public can help prevent loss of lives and property.

And to make sure that the language of the professionals who predict natural disasters, like cyclones, are communicated and understood by the people who relay it to the public, a media workshops is conducted by the National Weather Service and TEMCO at the start of the hurricane season.

The media workshop for the 2019-2020 hurricane season was held today at the Department of Homeland Security and was attended by private and government broadcasters and Blue Sky Communications.

The National Weather Service showed some new products now featured on its FaceBook page giving weather information that’s pleasing to the eye, with graphics and photos , as well as text that is easy to understand.

The media was invited to make recommendations on how to improve the weather products.

Based on the experience from past tropical cyclones, Meteorologist In Charge at the National Weather Service Elinor Lutu McMoore reported that members of the public are getting information from various websites instead of relevant and up-to-date weather information from their office.

For example because Samoa’s Radio 2AP is heard in the territory many residents follow information from the Samoa Meteorological Service which uses different thresholds for warnings, advisories and watches than us.
