After seeing for himself conditions of the Special Ed classroom at the Nu’uuli Vocational Technical High School, Tuala-uta Rep Larry Sanitoa requested the directors of Education and Public Works to make improvements.

Ms Faavela Isileli, one of the SPED teachers had asked for Rep Sanitoa’s help after her own pleas for repairs did not get any attention.

Rep Sanitoa said he was appalled at what he found.

Both the SPED classroom and office space are rat infested and this was evident from the rat droppings on desks and other office equipment every morning.

The air conditioner was not working but has now been fixed by Public Works.

The SPED teacher also said that the students need a restroom and shower and more space for teachers and students.

Director of Education Dr. Ruth Matagi Tofiga told Rep. Sanitoa that none of these conditions were brought to her attention during a visit to the technical high school earlier in the week but she would look into them.

On the Columbus Day holiday, Monday, a maintenance crew from Public Works was at the school to work on repairs.

Also a new air conditioner for the classroom is being secured.

The Tuala-uta faipule thanked Director of Public Works Mrs Faleosina Voigt for  the prompt response  to the teachers’ request.
