One of the featured speakers at the two day Cancer Research Symposium hosted by the American Samoa Cancer Coalition and INSPIRE American Samoa, was Dr. Randall Holcomb.

He’s the Director of the Univeristy of Hawaii Cancer Center, which is one of only 70 designated cancer centers of the National Cancer Institute in the United States.

In his presentation, Dr. Holcomb discussed the shortage of worldwide shortage of oncologists and the inequities between cancer treatment staff in urban areas and those in rural towns.

He said in the US there are fewer oncologists serving rural areas, most are practicing in urban areas.

Looking at the US Pacific territories, Dr Holocomb said the lack of oncologists requires a change in the delivery of services, one where other medical staff would need to take care of cancer patients.
