.Ocean travelers between American Samoa and Samoa will soon be sailing on a brand new $ST66.74 million ferry currently being built in Japan.
According to Samoa Observer, the current vessel, Lady Naomi is 21 years old and its condition is deteriorating.
“I can confirm that’s the cost the Government of Japan has approved for the construction of the New Ferry,” said the C.E.O of the Samoa Shipping Corporation.
He said despite the age of the present vessel, it is still safe to operate but the cost of maintaing the ferry is increasing with age.
“As well as it is getting difficult to meet and comply with international safety requirements guiding its operations.”
According to the C.E.O. the ferry is being funded with aid assistance from the Government of Japan.
