Last Saturday, at the exact time that Commander Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon 50 years ago, an exhibit to mark the milestone event was opened at the Feleti Barstow Public Library in Utulei.  First Lady Cynthia Malala Moliga and chairman of the library board, Tapaau Dr. Dan Aga, were among the small crowd that attended the opening.

American Samoa contributed to the Apollo 11 and subsequent space missions as it was here that the astronauts were welcomed after splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.

Territorial Librarian Justin Maga said the Apollo 11 50th anniversary exhibit will be on display at the library for a month to tell the story of American Samoa’s contribution to the Apollo space program.

The exhibit has photos of the Apollo 11 and later Apollo mission splashdowns, the airport welcoming of the astronauts, entertainment by school children, President Nixon presenting the flag  of American Samoa that was carried by the Apollo 11 to the moon to Governor John Hayden, and moon rocks which the astronauts brought back to earth.

The exhibit is sponsored jointly by the Feleti Barstow Public Library, the Jean P Haydon Museum and the Office of Archives.
