Survey gauges impact of filariasis pills

Tomorrow teams will begin house-to-house surveys in randomly selected villages to find out how effective the filariasis pills taken last year by local residents were in getting rid of the disease.

The survey is conducted by the Department of Health in conjunction with the Pacific Islands Health Officers Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Residents will remember the mass administration of filariasis medication last year.

A follow up survey determined that 73 percent of the territory’s population took the medication.

The survey that begins tomorrow and will last eight weeks will help determine the impact of the medication in getting rid of filariasis. DOH Epidemiologist Dr. John Tufa explains:
