The second regular session of the 36th Legislature opens next Monday and the Fiscal Year 2020 budget for the American Samoa Government is the main piece of legislation lawmakers will be reviewing.

According to Fono staff, no legislative proposals have been received from the administration.

In April, a lease was sent by the Governor’s Office for review; however, it was not introduced before the first regular session ended.

The lease renewal is for Niu Group, which is leasing the former Pacific Products lot between ANZ Bank and Nu’uuli Technical High School.

The original lease for the company, owned by Leilua Stevenson, was one day short of 10 years, from March 1, 2019 to February 25, 2029. Niu Group wants to exercise its option to extend the term of this lease for a period of 30 years.

According to the Department of Commerce, Niu Group plans to set up wholesale and retail operations at the site.

An April 2 letter from Acting Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga said the ASG recognizes the importance of generating commerce for the benefit of the overall economy.

He asks that the Fono approve the lease extension.
