Petition to retain Atafua as Samoana Principal

“We stand as one to support Principal ‘Rod’ Atafua, to remain as Principal of Samoana High School.”

That’s the cause for a petition that’s circulating online and also making the rounds among students, parents, and alumni of Samoana High School.

Deanna Fuimaono, who initiated the online petition at change.org, says she doesn’t have children attending Samoana now (she used to) or know Mr. Atafua personally. But she is a Samoana alumnus and has learned that during the time that Atafua has been principal, Samoana has won several sports and academic competitions, the morale of the school is good, he works with the PTA and school discipline has been effective, unlike previous years.

She cited that during Atafua’s first year as principal, the football team won the championship, Samoana has been the overall winners of the Speech Festival two years in a row, the students topped the National History Day competition, won the first music festival and a 9th grader won the Samoan writing contest.
She also complimented that as principal, Atafua had an all women administration who helped maintained discipline at the school.

And he worked well with the Samoana PTA.

Fuimaono wasn’t sure of DOE’s plans for Atafua except that he is being moved to the central office to administration.

She said the petition has received great support from bay area lawmakers.
The online petition has received more than 800 signatures with a goal of 1,000.
Here is a link to the petition.

The reasons that signors stated for putting their names to the petition are:
“He has definitely helped raise the standards within our school. He is a great leader and has dedicated his time in our students learning and also his fellow staff/colleagues.”
“Give him time. Samoana is the best public school overall in all academic activities for ST 2019. That should be something! Beside the school has an accreditation soon, why change leadership Now?”
“I served a brief time under his leadership and he would make time to talk to me and find out what I needed as a teacher and did his best to provide. He cares not only for the students well being but the staff as well. Great leader.”
“Samoana is elevating to new heights as never before. Go sharks.”
