Report: Women paid higher wages than men in Samoa

The average wages for Samoan women are higher than their male counterparts even though the men continue to dominate the formal employment sector.

According to Samoa Observer this is contained in the March 2019 Bureau of Statistics report recently released.

The report said that 56.6 percent of the estimated working population are men who command 54.5 percent of the country’s total wages.

But it says that in terms of average quarterly wages, women average ST6,020 while men averaged $ST5,496.

The report also said that $ST139.8 million was paid out in wages for this quarter.

Public administration, finance, health and education employ more women than men. In comparison, construction, fishing, agriculture, electricity, water, transport, food manufacturing other business services as well as communications and commerce employ more men.

Samoa’s workforce increased by 1.1 percent since last December and salaries are up by 1.4 percent.

Education and restaurant sectors contributed more to the growth increasing by 16.7 and 12.3 respectively, compared to March last year.

The report showed also that women annual wages are 11.8 percent higher than men on average of $24,281 tālā.
