ASG’s drug and alcohol policy explained to cabinet

All new applicants for government jobs will now be subject to a drug test in accordance with legislation that became law late last year.

ASG has established a drug and alcohol policy to help implement the new law.

At a cabinet meeting today, Assistant Attorney General Emanuel Tupua, who helped draft the policy explained it in detail for Acting Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga, directors and CEOs.

Director of Human Resources Mrs Eseneiaso Liu told the meeting that all  applicants for ASG jobs will now be subject to drug tests.

Under the law, employees who exhibit signs that they may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs in the workplace may also be referred for testing.

The tests will be performed by the Department of Health and in extreme cases of alcohol or drug abuse, the LBJ Hospital will also be involved.

The Department of Human and Social Services is to provide counseling services for employees who have a drug or alcohol problem.
