The TOA taxi stand was still opened and doing business as usual today despite a notice of suspension of its business license delivered to the stand yesterday by the Department of Commerce.
The suspension was due to the TOA stand charging rates that were not approved by the Commerce Commission as required by law.
DOC said they received several calls from members of the public reporting that the taxi stand was still in business and charging the higher taxi fares.
DOC, based on the recommendation of the Commerce Commission, moved to suspend the TOA’s business license effective immediately for 120 days.
According to a DOC staffer who was handling the matter, police have been informed and they have the power to impound any taxi based at the TOA taxi stand that is not complying with the order.
When asked today, the head of the taxi stand, Tuitamai, said he is withholding comment at this time but indicated that they have hired an attorney to represent them in dealings with DOC and the Commerce Commission.
