
The Alliance for Strengthening Families and Brown Girl Woke partnership closed out Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the second annual Poetry Slam.
The Poetry Slam featured ASCC students eager to express their views through rap, song, dance and poetry before an audience of their peers along with supportive friends and family.
The contestants were joined by students from Samoana, Tafuna, Leone and Fasao Marist high schools.
Originality and content highlighted their perspective on impacting issues such as suicide, teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol addiction and abusive family relationships.

During short breaks between acts, Poetry Slam organizer and Big Girl Woke founder Maluseu Doris Tulifau featured short videos produced by high school students. The videos are public service messages focused on awareness of abuse and the encouragement to “see something, say something”.
When the scores were tallied, Ms. Christina Scanlan was awarded first place; second place went to Ms. Lita and third place went to Ms. Losalini.
The Alliance for Strengthening Families looks forward to coordinating events for Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.
