The family of Sheldon Paul Haleck, who died four years ago after being assaulted by three police officers in Honolulu, is seeking $11 million in compensation.

His family has filed a civil lawsuit against the officers.

Sheldon, the son of former Commissioner of Public Safety William Haleck, filed the lawsuit along with Sheldon’s wife and siblings.

They allege that Sheldon was wrongfully seized, denied his liberty and fatally assaulted by HPD Officers Christopher Chung, Samantha Critchlow and Stephen Kardash.

The officers have adamantly denied the allegations.

In July of last year, the US Court of Appeals ruled the officers used excessive force during a deadly tasing near Iolani Palace in 2015.

Sheldon, 38, was wandering in the middle of the street unarmed when officers pepper sprayed him at least eight times and then shot him with a taser three times.

The Ninth Circuit determined it unconstitutional, clearing the way for a lawsuit against HPD.

The medical examiner said meth in Haleck’s system, combined with the effects of the taser caused his death, but ruled his death a homicide.
