It was a last minute invitation but the Talavalu rugby sevens team of American Samoa did themselves proud at the recent Marist International Sevens tournament in Apia.

According to the Samoa Observer, Talavalu Manager Annielyse Coffin said it was pleasing to get some good results at the Marist Sevens.

“Back home it’s American football all the way but for the American Samoa Rugby Union we’re trying to develop rugby so we can go through the competitions like Manu Samoa, New Zealand, Australia and so forth.”

The hurriedly put together team had only a month to prepare for the tournament but made the semi-finals of the Tanoa Competition winning two of four games.

Coffin said ASRU always try to make these tournaments like the annual Marist Sevens to “feel what a higher level of rugby is like” and learn from their mistakes.

She also said they have a womens team but they could not get them prepared in time.
