The finger has been pointed at American Samoa as being the source of illegal hard drugs like crystal methamphetamine coming into Samoa.

According to the Newsline Samoa newspaper, Samoa’s Minister for Customs, Tialavea Tionisio Hunt said this has been a long standing headache for border control prevention efforts.

“Anyone can jump on a fishing alia, shoot off to American Samoa, collect the stuff and land back here as if they’ve been out fishing,” Tialavea said.

The Minister said border control work is being done to the best of what the staff and other supporting efforts are capable of.

“I can’t say illegal drugs are not leaking from our boarders, there are many challenges, but it’s the best that we can do with what we’ve got,” he continued.

He said there are only two dogs working at border control and more is required if they are to be successfull.

“We need more dogs, including one that can sniff hard cash.”

The minister also believes more can be done at community level in monitoring illegal activities.

He said local communication technology is within everyone’s reach, and if people see anything suspicious that may have to do with illegal drugs, the police are only a phone call away.

“The church must be involved in preaching the evils of illegal drugs and alcohol abuse, as well as the traditional authority of the village leadership, if we want lasting long term solutions.”
