One of Samoa’s biggest commercial taro farmers, Peter Tulaga Eliesa, is in police custody facing an attempted murder charge in connection with the shooting of a woman who’s in Tupua Tamasese Meaole hospital with a gunshot wound to her face.

According to local media reports, Police Commissioner Fuiavailili Egon Keil, confirmed the defendant was in custody to await his court appearance.

“The victim is alive, suffering from a gunshot wound to the facial area,” said Fuiavailili.

He told Talamua Media police had several witnesses to the incident but could not say anything further as investigations were still underway.

A gun allegedly used in the shooting is being investigated to confirm if it was registered which could incur further charges against the defendant.

Eliesa is scheduled to appear in the Supreme Court February 4th  for an initial appearance.
