The tropical depression near Fiji has now been named Tropical Storm Mona and as of Thursday morning was lying 860 miles northwest of Tutuila.

Mona was generating winds of 40 to 50 miles per hour for Fiji and is expected to be directly over the Fijian group by tomorrow.

Meteorologist Salu Hans Malala of the National Weather Service says heavy rainfall would be the major impact for the territory from Tropical Storm Mona and this would occur Sunday and continuing for the rest of next week.

The Fiji Meteorological Service says Tropical Storm Mona will likely be a Category 2 storm and maintain that strength as it crosses Fiji.

Heavy rain and wind warnings are already in force for much of Fiji.
