The Amerika Samoa Humanities Council is staging a drama festival on Friday, with three church youth groups performing plays in the Samoan language.

The plays which will be tied to the theme of Christmas will be held at the Kananafou Gymnasium beginning at 5 pm.

Director of the Humanities Council Taua Niualama Taifane says the drama festival is usually held in October for Humanities Month however because of a heavy schedule for that month it was decided to delay the event to December as an activity for Christmas.

The three groups who will stage the plays are:

Nu’uuli CCCAS which will perform a play titled, “Ua ifo le Aso O Malietoa.”

The Tafuna Susana Uesele, representing the Methodist Youth, will perform a  play about the origin of the name of Tafuna village.

And the Leone Catholic Youth, representing the Catholic Youth, will stage a play simply called, “Su’e”.

According to a write up about this last play, it is based on a true life love story originating from Leone, pitting two lovers from opposite sides of the racial divide.

Writer Director Tapa’au Dr Dan Aga says, “It’s a South Pacific story of enduring love set in the 1930’s when American Samoa was under US Naval administration”.

Without giving too much away, the story is about the daughter of a prominent family in American Samoa and her relationship with a US Naval corpsman which eventually drew them further away from each other.
