Sentencing of Fiu Saelua continued

The sentencing of the Governor’s Chief Of Staff, Fiu Johnny Saelua, which was set for today has been continued.

Court staff said this morning that the reason for the continuance is because District Court Judge Fiti Sunia is off island.

Fiu pled no contest to a misdemeanor charge of third degree assault.

He admitted that he caused physical contact with a woman knowuing the contact was offensive.

The woman has alleged that the defendant had sexually abused her .

Fiu had originally been charged with first degree sexual abuse and misdemeanor second degree sexual abuse. However the felony charge was dismissed after the independent prosecutor David Vargas said they had no witneses to call.

A plea agreement in the case was filed under seal which amended the mideneanor charge of second degree sexual abuse to third degree assault, which the defendant pled no contest to.
