Several departments have been seen clearing brush and cleaning up the perimeter of Pago Pago International Airport this week.

According to Airport Manager Tavita Fuimaono Governor Lolo Moliga gave instructions for government agencies to clean up the vegetation in and around the airport and prevent birds from congregating in the vicinity,

He says Hawaiian Air’s Sunday night flight encountered a bird strike though this did not happen in the airport area.

The airport management is awaiting a report from the pilot about what happened but Governor Lolo Moliga gave instructions before he departed the territory for government agencies to make the clean up of the airport a priority.

Faumuina says this is the time of the year that the Pacific clover or tuli migrates to the warmer waters of the Pacific.

And they are a common sight along the airport area, apparently being attracted by the vegetation.

Departments which helped Port Administration with the airport clean up are Homeland Security, Parks and Recreation. Agriculture, Youth and Women Affairs, Environmental Protection Agency,  Criminal Justice, Territorial Energy Office and the American Samoa Power Authority.
