Samoa’s one year old national airline, Samoa Airways, is already looking at further expansion plans, even as its profitability comes under scrutiny.
Minister for State Owned Enterprises, Lautafi Selafi Purcell told Samoa Observer that the airline will soon be looking at flying to other destinations in New Zealand and Australia.
“In the future when we expand our fleet, we will be looking at other destinations like Melbourne, Christchurch and Wellington,” he said.
The minister says Samoa Airways wouldn’t be going to Brisbane if government didn’t think it was going to be a profitable route.
The recent launch of the Apia-Brisbane service, Lautafi said, was an indication of the Government’s vision in identifying routes that would generate more revenue for the country.
Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi has announced that a second plane is to be added, at the beginning of December 2018, to the single leased aircraft it currently operates.
Tuilaepa said the airline will be operating a new Boeing 737-900 which is the next model up from the current B737-800 leased plane in use.
