Over 80 tires. That’s what was hauled up from the Malaloa Marina in an underwater clean up last Friday.

The clean up which was a prelude to the Fagota mo Taeao fishing tournament  was led by diver volunteers Sean Gregg of Atlantic Pacific Marine Inc and Valorie Gregg of Pacific Maritime Survey in collaboration with the Departments of Marine and Wildlife Resources and the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa, with assistance from Dustin Snow.

The Fagota mo Taeao open fishing tournament is aimed at promoting awareness of the benefits of marine sanctuary sites, and illustrate what’s allowed and whats banned at the sites.  The tournament is this Friday and Saturday.

Chris Banse, a member of the organizing committee, says in addition to the generous cash prizes for first, second and third in the six fish categories there’s also a special prize.
