The 5th Samoana Jazz and Arts Festival kicks off this evening at the Tradewinds Hotel Pavilion. with a Jazz & Blues Fiafia night.

This year the festival pays tribute to Samoa’s First Lady of Jazz Mavis Rivers with a cabaret show at the Lee Auditorium tomorrow night featuring River’s son Laauli Matt Catingub and his jazz ensemble.

The US Embassy in Samoa through its goodwill program is sponsoring Catingub’s band as well as a US Armed Forces band, for the Samoa leg of the festival which got underway two days ago and wraps up today.

At a press conference in Apia, Catingub said computers and audio editing technology make it too easy to make music sound good.

He said with the advent of clever computer generated music, “real music making needs to make a comeback.”

Laauli conductor of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra said, “Jazz comes down to listening.

“If young musicians can get a steady diet of music to listen to, that will hopefully influence their creativity.”

The final event for the American Samoa leg of the festival is on Sunday with Jazz at the Beach, at $2 Beach Avaio.
