In the past two weeks, residential and commercial customers of the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority, especially in the Tuala-uta District have reported slow internet and intermittent outages.

When asked for an explanation, ASTCA Acting Director Ms Falavaoto Sualevai said they haven’t observed any issues with slow connectivity.

And there are no problems with the Hawaiki Cable.

She said if customers are experiencing slow internet it may be related to the routers they are using.

She said ASTCA customers have been experiencing fast internet speeds and the most common issues or faults they’ve seen in the past few weeks are with faulty routers or computers.

She explains that ASTCA’s call center operates 24/7 and customers experiencing slow connection, should log a ticket if they are having issues with internet speed.

According to the Acting Director of ASTCA their trouble tickets are very minimal and are cleared by the end of each week which she says is unprecedented.

“We continue to improve on our responses,” said Sualevai.

ASTCA does have a backlog of new installations and is attempting to catch up with the limited resources available.

Ms Sualevai had reported at a House hearing last month that an upgrade of the Broadbank Linking American Samoa Terriotry or BLAST infrastructure was to be completed last month.

Asked for an update she said every provider goes through a series of systems and/or network upgrade in its lifetime in order to offer new feature sets and maintain its performance.

ASTCA does the same to keep its network secured, improved and resilient, as it is today.

Sualevai explained that the BLAST network has evolved into a broadband highway that has never before been experienced.

She said works are continuing on tweaking and perfecting services “so that we can deliver the best possible quality to our customers.”
