The American Samoa Power Authority is close to getting started on a new photovoltaic project on Tutuila which would produce 20 megawatts of electricity.

ASPA’s Chief Operations Office Lavatai Reno Vivao reported at last week’s cabinet meeting that the land for the project has been surveyed and ASPA is working closely with Public Works, Department of Commerce and the Lt. Governor on moving the project off the ground.

Also in the works is a 35 megawatt wind turbine project at Aasu.

Lavatai said that the deadline for the Request for Proposals for that renewable energy job has been extended because of interest from investors in the United States and Europe.

Lavatai said even though their leader, Utu Abe Malae has passed, ASPA is making every effort to continue the projects which they have been mandated by the governor.

Governor Lolo Moliga has given ASPA a challenge to have Tutuila 100% powered by renewable energy by 2020.
