Among the numerous hats that Utu Abe Malae wore was chairman of the Governor’s Task Force on Education Reform.
The task force’s priority recommendation was to make the Department of Education semi autonomous.
Utu was also behind the Annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Summit. 
Many of the speakers at the Family Service for Utu last night talked about how he motivated young people to seek higher education.
Former Director of Education Vaitinasa Dr. Salu Hunkin Finau said Utu was an early overachiever.

Director of Port Administration Taimalelagi Dr. Claire Poumele told the gathering about some projects that Utu had set his sights on and she rallied Utu’s co-workers and friends to finish them in his memory.
