There’s been public complaints about the conveyor belt at Pago Pago International Airport breaking down from time to time.

This was one of the topics that Director of Port Administration, Taimalelagi Dr. Claire Poumele was asked about at a hearing of the House Government Operations Committee this morning.

According to Taimalelagi, on the ASG Workforce Day the governor visited the airport and had a look around the terminal.

She said following the governor’s visit, local funds will be made available to fix the terminal building.

Taimalelagi told the hearing that repairs of the airport terminal will begin next week.

She said the cost of a new conveyor belt is $250,000 though she didn’t say if a new conveyor belt will be purchased as part of the renovations.

A report that the director distributed for Committee members at the hearing showed a total of $63.3 million worth of improvement projects for airports at Tafuna, Fitiuta and Ofu.

Some of the major projects which are underway for Tafuna include the rehabilitation of lighting for runway 8/28 and taxiways, a $2.8 million job carried out by McConnell Dowell, that is 95 % complete; construction overlay of runway 5/23, a $9.2 million job that is 80% complete and which McConnell Dowell is also the contractor; rehabilitation of the terminal apron,  phase 2 construction which costs $11.2 million, built by McConnell Dowell; and relocation of the fuel tanks from the airport parking lot, a $6.2 million project carried out by Paramount at a cost of $5.6 million.
