Attorney General Talauega Eleasalo Ale advises the public that the village of Vaitogi will be observing their traditional annual sa or curfew on Saturday, September 15 from 6pm to Sunday, September 16 at 6pm.
During the 24 hour curfew, entry and exit to Vaitogi village is prohibited. The sa commemorates a great fire which raged through the village more than 200 years ago.
Elderly residents of Vaitogi say the fire spread through Vaitogi lands for days and could not be extinguished threatening the lives of residents and destroying scores of acres of crops and vegetation.
After village chiefs gathered the people together to pray for the fires to stop, heavy rain fell extinguishing the flames.
Since then Vaitogi villagers from near and far have gathered each year to mark the event. A prayer service is held and there’s feasting and entertainment.
