Parents of participants of the Summer Youth Employment Program were disappointed that their sons and daughters did not receive their first paychecks last Friday.

Several parents who contacted KHJ News said work supervisors for their children had been told by Human Resources that the first paychecks would be released Friday.

The participants who work from 8 to 4 waited around for their checks but after 2pm they received word from DHR that the checks wont be ready.

When contacted today, DHR Deputy Director -Training Makerita Enesi said the first paychecks for SYEP participants will be released on July 27th .

This will cover the first three weeks from June 25 to July 13.

She said all supervisors and employers were informed of this release date including parents calling in to DHR.

Enesi said as usual any first pay check to be processed through the ASG payroll system is delayed for several reasons or discrepancies…for example different names on Social Security cards, birth certificates or passports, time sheets not signed by supervisors, or late submission of time sheets to Human Resources.

There are 805 participants and they are paid $5 an hour.  The young workers are subject to the wage tax.

She didnt expect any delays with the second paychecks.
