Samoan taro will soon be available to Samoans living in Alaska, all the way from the big island Savai’i.
American Samoan born Michael Ulugia is on his way to being the first taro exporter to Anchorage, Alaska where he has lived during the last 10 years.
He is already packing frozen taro at the Ministry of Agriculture packing site at Nu’u.
Samoa Observer reports Ulugia’s family was originally from Vaiusu and Satupa’itea, Savai’i.
Ulugia has a commercial cooking background having been the head-cook for the Mexican restaurant franchise, Qdoba.
He said he spent years working and saving up to get together enough money to invest in a business venture that focused on the agriculture and fisheries sector – the backbone of Samoa’s economy.
“My plan always was about the work that we’re doing, to provide a future for the family,” said Ulugia.
“This is something that has been in my heart for a long time. I was always in despair about the situation in Samoa so this is why I have returned and my family has given me their blessings and their approval to do the work.
He is now working with the Small Business Enterprises Centre to make sure his venture stays afloat.
