“One Thousand Ropes,” the movie written and directed by award winning writer and director Tusi Tamasese has been selected as New Zealand’s contender for the foreign-language section of the Academy Awards.
“One Thousand Ropes” is the story of a Samoan family living in suburban New Zealand, re-connecting and putting to rest the ghosts that haunt them. It has an all Samoan cast and is entirely in the Samoan language.
Lead actor, Tuiasau Uelese Petaia not only is excited about the film making it to the Oscars but also that it will be shown in American Samoa for the first time later this month.
Since the movie was released in New Zealand and Samoa in February, a group of people have been working with the film’s distributors to allow it to be shown in the territory.
They have finally given the green light.
Tuiasau says details are being finalized and he’s happy that the many people in American Samoa who have been asking about a local showing will get to see the movie here.
