The ASG Treasury is releasing $3 million worth of tax refund checks today.
There was no prior announcement about the issuance of tax refund checks but the atrium of the AP Lutali Executive Office Building in Utulei was crowded nonetheless.
Several of the people standing in line when KHJ News was there before 9am said they didn’t know the filing dates included in the batch of checks out today.
One young man said he was trying his luck waiting in line and wasn’t sure if he was going to get a check
When we enquired with the Tax Office we were told that the filing dates covered in this batch was from February 18 to April 11th.
All of the banks were full as people got their checks and went to cash them.
One bank teller said they were not prepared for the avalanche of customers coming in to cash their checks.
We also received calls early this morning inquiring if Treasury issued a notice about the issuance of refund checks. We didn’t.
We checked with the government television station, KVZK-TV, and they too said there was no notice.
It’s not the first refund release where Treasurer Ueligitone Tonumaipe’a hasn’t issued a public notice.
The notices not only inform wage earners expecting refunds of the filing dates for which refunds will be issued, it also lets banks, stores and businesses know to prepare with enough cash.
