Manu’atele Crew Receives Oil Spill Training

The crew of the Manu’atele received training from the US Coast Guard on how to respond quickly to an oil spill at sea.

Lt Commander Gregg May of the Coast Guard Honolulu District said the training focused on the use of the vessel of opportunity scheming system, specialized equipment used to contain and clean up oil spills.

The system is stored at the port and is deployed every time there is a n oil spill.

Lt. Commander May said 8 members of the Manu’atele crew were trained in how to deploy the equipment and use it to stop the spread of an oil spill and clean it.

The training was conducted in Pago Pago Harbor and Lt. May said the Manuatele crew responded well.
