
Silver Bay Seafoods of Alaska has notified residents who applied and were picked to work for the company that they are expected to leave the territory next month,
The company had a job fair here in January and more than 300 people showed up.
Silver Bay Seafoods sent representatives here a few weeks ago and those who had been selected for hire were informed of travel arrangements to Alaska.
A former American Samoa Government employee who has been hired, Sam Savali, says some of them are leaving in mid June for Honolulu and the company has arranged their travel to Alaska.
The employees pay for their airfare from Pago Pago to Honolulu and the company covers the rest of their travel to Alaska.
Employees will earn between $10 to $12 per hour and the term of employment will be 6 months.
The company is providing room and board at $10 a day.
Shannon Grant, Hiring Manager for Alaska Seafood Company said in January they hope to hire 250 workers from American Samoa for the salmon season.
Many of those who showed up at the company’s informational session in January were young people who said they had been looking for jobs since gradation from high school 2 – 3 years prior.
There were also employees laid off at the Samoa Tuna Processors plant and a few American Samoa Government employees.
