The Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC) is giving recognition to the new slate of officers of the  American Samoa National Olympic Committee (ASNOC).

KHJ  News received information that ONOC had questions regarding the election of officers for ASNOC last month because  of concerns on lack of athlete participation in the elections.

Secretary General of ASNOC,  Ethan Lake explained, “Yes, this was one of the issues because the Athletes Commission Clause mandated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was never added to our constitution even though the past administration had said that it was.”

Lake said the officers held a  Special General Assembly after the elections and before the ONOC Conference and were able to add the clause to ASNOC’s constitutional by-laws.

He said this was accepted by ONOC.

Last week, ONOC Secretary General, Mr. Rick Blas was in the territory for meetings with ASNOC to  address a few concerns.

One included the Athletes Commission Clause as well as an Anti-Doping clause.

Lake said both needed to be in the ASNOC Constitution, mandated by the IOC.

He said Blas was encouraged when he found out that the newly elected officers and Executive Committee had already begun to remedy the concerns before the ONOC Conference.

A Special General Assembly meeting was called to approve amendments to the ASNOC constitution which added the  two clauses.

Blas was also checking on the status of ASNOC’s administration building and training center  to be constructed on three acres of government land behind the baseball field.
